I'm in a situation in my life at the moment where I find myself at the computer at all hours and frequently when a QR action is about to start or is in process. As you know, many of QR's processes really take over the CPUs, making my work grind to a halt unless I cancel the action.

If it is at all possible:

1. Could QR play more fairly with the other children? Share the CPUs in a less monopolistic fashion?

and

2. Could QR's activity monitor gain a "Pause" button, obviating the need to remember to launch QR and manually start a canceled action? (Of course, one would still need to restart the action from the activity monitor, but...)

This morning I found that the little QR monitor doohickey was showing that 3 actions were awaiting completion (a capture, a compacting, and a merge). QR suffered a total lockup when launched. Based on the time set for that first action, QR likely had been stuck for about six and a half hours.

Apparently something was awry with my backup volume because any process that attempted to access it would lock up (Disk Utility, the Finder, etc.). Ultimately many apps went bad as well.

After restarting without the drive attached (and running a number of utilities on my startup disk), Disk Utility made a "minor" repair to the backup disk's Volume Header and all seems right as rain now.

I doubt that QR is at fault here, that the problem was likely at the disk level, but I'm attaching some log files for you in case QR was in fact the culprit.

Here's a part of an error log that might be of interest (or maybe not):

(I was unable to find any appropriate system log, but I could send a crash.log for one of the first apps to go down during this process if you'd like.)

Although no other app was able to handle the situation, is there perhaps a way to design QR to exit more gracefully in such a situation?

Probably a legitimate error, but maybe you could explain what's going on and if I need to repair something by hand?

I had to stop a background compacting that was intruding into my work day. I clicked the little cancel button and it went into its cancel routines. After a while it threw up a little alert button and quit. When I checked the log there were 4 cancel exceptions:

Hey, James:

QRecall saved my bacon for the first time today! I had just downloaded a new version of some software and trashed the previous version. Unfortunately the new version seems to have some serious problems and garbled its database. With QRecall I was able to quickly and easily restore both yesterday's version of the database and and previous version of the app! Hooray for QRecall!

Anyway, when digging out the previous version of the app, I noticed that QRecall seems to have a bit of a sorting issue. In my application folder I've got a batch of folders forced to the top of the list by prefixing their names with a space:

That kinda helps. I have been sorting 6 ways to Sunday, but things get blurry when you've got schedules with Tuesday & Thursday; Monday, Wednesday, Saturday; and Sunday & Friday.

Just an idea, but no biggie.

I was stumped by the fact that last night's captures had taken so long -- 8 hours for a capture that had taken 10 hours originally. Well, it turns out I had 2 simultaneous captures going on; bound to slow things down.

Especially for numskulls like me, would you consider adding a timeline view for schedules to aid in seeing when you've got things scheduled to avoid this kind of inadvertent simultaneity?

1. Would it be possible to add a condition which would prevent an action from occurring if a previous verify failed? It would be nice to be able to automatically stop actions which could potentially further corrupt a damaged archive.

2. What about adding a "repair if damaged" step to the verify action?

3. I'd love it if you could add Growl support so that completed actions and verification reports could be accessed more easily than launching the app and checking the logs.

I suggest that you create "Next:" and "Previous:" links between each of the subtopic pages in the Guide topics. You've done it in some places, but not all. The quantity of links on each page is great, but to get a complete picture of the program, the user is now required to page back to the start page in order to move forward to the next subtopic.

I continue to think about your stated goals for the help files (as mentioned in the discussion about my confusion about the Rolling Merge, you'd like to keep them short and succinct) and I believe that with software of this depth and complexity (despite its surface simplicity) you might seriously consider a more thorough manual in a different form -- say as a PDF or RTF, etc., attachment. (Or I could propose to David Pogue a QRecall: The Missing Manual

.) I think you need more space for examples and analogy.

Before I go into my continuing difficulties with the concept, I need to clarify something else that I think I've misunderstood:

Are Merges and Rolling Merges exclusively for manipulation of the archive itself? There's no capturing going on?

So in other words, I would likely need three actions per archive?:
1. A recurring capture
2. A recurring merge or rolling merge of the resulting archive
3. A recurring compact of the archive

Somehow I (mistakenly?) got the impression that the Rolling Merge included a capture and then the merge.

Like I said earlier: it all seems so simple and straight ahead until you really start implementing. And I'm sure it ultimately is once some kind of contextual leap is made.
